Think before you post

Words are extremely powerful!  One can never know how much your words, written or spoken, can effect another person.  In The Last Message Received, compiled by Emily Trunko readers view the last messages of people who submitted quotes & stories to Emily through Tumblr.  Many of the messages are deeply sad but thought provoking.  The end of the book gives readers positive resources for those in need of help.  The Last Message Received really makes you think about what you say and do, whether it is written or spoken.  Remember what you learned in Kindergarten, "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it all."   So be kind, celebrate those around!

Get in the Game, Read!

Welcome Back!

We have had a rocky start to the beginning of the school year, but that is okay,
we are resilient! We are K-Park!

Get in the Game, READ!

I did not see the end of this book coming!  WOW!  I wonder how it compares to the movie.

"The story of a teenage girl who's literally allergic to the outside world. When a new family moves in next door, she begins a complicated romance that challenges everything she's ever known. The narrative unfolds via vignettes, diary entries, texts, charts, lists, illustrations, and more"--Provided by publisher.

This Stephenie Meyer does not have aliens, hosts, vampires or werewolves and it is still a good read!
"An ex-agent on the run from her former employers must take one more case to clear her name and save her life."--Provided by publisher.

All is Pieces is a TAYSHAS 2018 nominee book.  Fast paced and my heart went out to Savannah, who tries so hard to keep it all together for her younger brother.
"A girl struggles to take care of her younger brother with special needs while confronting her own anger issues"--Provided by publisher.

An Ember in the Ashes

The next Beyond the Book student book club will discuss two books.  One of them is An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir.  This book has been out long enough to have a sequel but I just recently gotten around to reading it from my ever growing list.  Let me just say this one is intense!  It follows the theme we have read lately in YA books of the oppressed main character overcoming the dominating government tried up nicely with a love triangle.
Laia has lost everyone in her family but her brother who has been kidnapped by the Empire.  She works with the resistance as a spy in hopes of freeing her brother.  But she quickly learns she cannot trust the resistance and teams up with the Commandant's son.  But can she really trust him?  And will she save her brother?  The story moves quickly which kept me interested; however, the "kids killing kids" action that readers continue to see in YA novels is really too much for my taste.  Maybe because I am not a teenager but I just really need something with a little less violence. Despite the intensity, the story is strong and the plot well developed.  I cannot wait to hear what the student book club thinks!

Reading Right Now

So my TBR list grows each day with all the new Young Adult books out right now!  One book at a time, right?  Currently, I am reading Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys a historical fiction author. It is a page turner!

All American Boys

All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely  (F REY Young Adult)
Sixteen year old Rashad is accused of stealing a bag of potato chips, which leads to his brutal arrest.  Quinn witnesses the arrest by the police officer who is the brother of his best friend.  Quinn is torn about whether to share what he saw as tensions arise between friends and family.
I like that this book is written by two authors and the chapters alternate between characters.  The subject matter is relevant to current issues and places readers in a "what would you do scenario."  All American Boys will definitely spark student discussion.

Girl, Unframed by Deb Caletti

Sydney Reilly is concerned about visiting her mother in San Francisco for the summer.  Her mother, Lila Shore, is a famous actress who has n...
